The X-Large is for Giant breeds and families with several dogs that will sleep together if they are cool enough. The Giant breeds are more sensitive to size (they want to fit their whole body on it comfortably) so you should buy the X-Large if you have a St. Bernard, Great Dane, Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, or more than one dog in your family.
